Kalitta Motorsports News

Doug Kalitta has proven this season that his Mac Tools dragster is one of the quickest machines in Top Fuel, supported by his category-best five No. 1 qualifying positions.

As the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship heads to the famed Texas Motorplex near Dallas for round two of NHRA’s playoffs, Kalitta is in the championship mix, sitting fourth in the series standings, only 43 points out of first place. complete story

CONCORD, N.C. (September 15, 2013)— After powering her 10,000 horsepower Kalitta Motorsports Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car to a career best run of 4.027-seconds at 310.70-mph during the second round of qualifying, Alexis DeJoria sat in the No. 5 spot on the ladder and was set to square off against Ron Capps in round one of eliminations on Sunday.

In what was an unofficial rematch of Indy where Team Patrón lost to Capps by less than one thousandth of a second in round one, the team felt confident going up against the Napa car once again, looking to even the score. Unfortunately, the Patrón Toyota Camry smoked the tires right at the hit of the throttle, quickly ending Team Green’s chance of advancing to the second round.

“Obviously, we’re let down by today’s first round loss. We went over everything, and went over the numbers with the DHL car and both cars were just more aggressive than what the track could handle,” said champion tuner Tommy DeLago, speaking of the Kalitta DHL Funny Car which made it to almost the 200-foot mark before also pulling the tires loose. “We have a good idea of what the issue is and we’ll definitely rectify it before Dallas.”

“Despite the letdown, the excitement in me is boiling because I know that we’re getting to a place where we have a car that’s going to whoop some butt before the season is over. Being the third quickest running car in Q4 at Indy [4.081-sec, 309.77-mph], the third quickest in Indy E1 [4.036-sec, 312.25-mph], and then running that 4.027 during Friday’s night run with a cylinder out from the 700-ft mark, it’s pretty exciting. We’re starting to make some really good headway and I know we’re going to win some races before the year is over,” he added.

Q1: 4.154 sec. at 302.41 mph

Alexis DeJoria, Driver

“I definitely feel a lot better about this weekend in Charlotte than I did when we raced here earlier this season. This is the best our team has ever done in Charlotte. In fact, this is one of the best qualifying weekends we’ve had this year. We ran our quickest time ever in Q2 with that 4.02. The car has really turned a corner and we’ve come a long way. Tomorrow we have lane choice over Ron Capps in the first round. We had him first round in Indy and he ended up beating us by less than a thousandth of a second, so hopefully tomorrow it’ll be our car that sets off the win light and advances to round two. Team Patrón feels good going into race day and I’m confident we’ll be successful.”

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (September 10, 2013)— It’s down to the homestretch of the 24-race 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing series. With just six races left, Alexis DeJoria and the Kalitta Motorsports Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car team are looking to close out the season strong. Coming off of their season best run in Indianapolis earlier this month (4.036-seconds at 312.35-mph), the Patrón team looks to carry that momentum in to Charlotte, N.C. as they get ready to compete in the 6th annual NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway this weekend.

In her short two year career as a nitro Funny Car pilot, DeJoria, who spent six years in the NHRA’s sportsman classes learning the ropes before hopping into the seat of a nitro-fueled machine, has amassed a visit to the finals, four semi-final appearances, and qualifying bonus points to her list of accomplishments. The Patrón team, which has experienced their fair share of ups and downs, is looking to add a win to that growing list, and they feel that this weekend could be their time.

“Without the pressure of trying to get into the Countdown, we’re able to focus all of our efforts on picking up that first win,” said DeJoria. “Winning of course has always been the goal, but now that the cutoff for the Countdown has come and gone, it’s now our only goal. Our eyes are on the prize. Tommy [DeLago, crew chief and 2011 Funny Car world champion tuner] has had good luck at the Charlotte track in the past. Judging from our Indy runs- not just the race, but also the test session that week prior- I think we’ve made some really good headway. We’ve learned a lot and Indy proved that we have a great car and a combination that can win races. Our last two runs at Indy [Q4 and E1] were among the quickest of the whole Funny Car class, which is promising.”
